Wrecked truck leads cops to thief

A Conover man was arrested overnight Monday after breaking into a home, stealing goods, wrecking his getaway car and fleeing the scene.

Police responded to a traffic accident early Monday morning near the 200 block of 5th Street NE in Conover to find an abandoned Dodge Truck outside of a residential home.

After inspecting the unoccupied vehicle, police found jewelry and other goods lying in the roadway. Police checked several homes in the area and discovered that a home at 202 5th St. NE had been broken into, said Conover Police Sgt. Robert Clark.

Police ran the license plate of the wrecked vehicle, which led them to the residence of Dustan Tyler Peterson, 22, of 3469 Smithfield Drive NW in Conover.

Peterson was arrested and charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods and injury to real property. He is in the Catawba County Detention Center under a $25,000 bond.

“It appeared he was trying to leave the house and backed the truck down into a big ditch,” Clark said.

Clark was scheduled to make his first court appearance Monday.
