Series tied 1-1 after Lady Tigers' late rally falls short

After falling behind 4-0 in the first couple of innings, Fred T. Foard rallied in its second game against C.B. Aycock in the best-of-three state 3A championship series Saturday.

The Lady Tigers (26-5) scored three runs in the top of the third, but could not get any closer, dropping the contest, 4-3, to the Falcons.

Foard and Aycock play the third and deciding game Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.

Aycock senior Ivy Hartzell gave the Lady Falcons (30-3) a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

After Brooke Bell and Meredith Burroughs reached base on a walk and error, respectively, Hartzell singled to bring home both players.

Aycock struck again in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Misty Edwards singled and later scored on a fielding error that put Bell on second base.

Burroughs singled for her first hit of the series on the next at-bat to plate Bell from second base and give the Lady Falcons a 4-0 advantage.

Foard started its rally in the top of the third inning.

After Lady Tigers second baseman Olivia Purvis reached base on a one-out single, advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third, junior catcher Mackenzie Dziendziel drove in a run on a single.

The next batter, Foard third baseman Ashley Oliver, connected on her third two-run homer of the postseason to cut the Lady Tigers' deficit to one run, 4-3.

Despite getting the leadoff runner on in the fifth and sixth innings, the Lady Tigers were unable to plate a run to tie the contest, allowing Aycock to walk away with the one-run victory.

Earlier in the day, Foard won game one of the series, 1-0, in nine innings.
