Red Devils finish in third

The NCHSAA 2A state golf championships concluded Tuesday at Longleaf Golf and Country Club in Southern Pines.

Newton-Conover, the 2012 CVAC golf champions, took third place at the event, trailing only North Lincoln and state champion Salisbury.

The Red Devils carded a team score of 620, which was 16 strokes behind the Knights and 47 behind the Wasps.

Individually, Bunker Hill’s Tyler Lail finished in a tie for fifth place, the best standing of county golfers at the championships.

Lail was one of four county golfers to finish inside the top 11 spots.

Maiden’s Thomas Lilly came in eighth.

Newton-Conover posted two top-11 finishes, including Alex Hefner in ninth and Lee Mitchell in an 11th place tie.

Four other Red Devils carded scores, including Hayden Bandy in a tie for 23rd, John Evans in a tie for 45th, Chris Ziogas in a tie for 49th and Garrett Edwards in a tie for 53rd.

North Surry’s Taylor Coalson won the title with a score of 140, defeating Salisbury’s Alex Nianouris in a sudden death playoff.
