PREP NOTEBOOK: Red Devils edge Trojans on court

The Newton-Conover volleyball team avenged a loss to Bandys earlier in the season with a five-set victory Thursday at home 17-25, 25-10, 25-20, 15-25 and 15-7.

The Lady Red Devils improve to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in the CVAC.

Kayla Champion led the Lady Trojans (6-7, 5-3) with 12 kills, 10 digs, five aces, three assists and three blocks.

Sierra Brotherton added 11 kills, seven blocks and four assists for Bandys.

Maiden 3, West Caldwell 0

The Lady Blue Devils continue their roll in conference play with a straight-sets victory against the Lady Warriors 25-21, 25-8 and 25-7.

Rachel Houston, Kha Xiong and Mckenzie Garrison led Maiden (11-3, 7-1) with eight kills each.

Hannah Martin added 15 assists and six kills, while Kalie Johnson made 12 assists.

St. Stephens 3, Hickory 0

The Lady Indians notched their sixth conference victory with a shut out against the Lady Red Tornadoes on Thursday 25-16, 25-20 and 25-16.

Jenna Boliek led Saint (14-1, 6-1) with eight kills and eight digs. Mallory Hoyle, Marisa Jones and Breanna Hall added five kills each.

Bailey Cloninger and Katelyn Houser each made 13 assists.

Defensively, Ashley Markland made 15 digs.

South Iredell 3, Bunker Hill 1

The Lady Bears three-game conference match win streak was ended by the Lady Vikings on Thursday 25-13, 25-23, 28-30 and 25-14.

Megan Fair led Bunker Hill (5-11, 4-4) with 11 kills and 21 digs, Krissy Helms made 23 assist and Megan Vinson blocked three shots.

South Iredell improves to 10-4 overall and 8-0 in the CVAC.

St. Stephens 4, Hibriten 0

Behind two goals from Luke Bruce, the Indians knocked off the Panthers.

The Indians (8-4, 3-0) are the only undefeated soccer team in the Northwestern 3A/4A.

Nich Bryant added a goal and an assist for Saint, while Rafael Sauceda added a goal.

Jordan Beane and Spencer Sigmon tallied assists for the Indians.

The Panthers, who entered the game as the No. 11 team in the state in 3A boys soccer, fall to 10-2-1 overall and 2-1-0 in conference play.

Newton-Conover 2, Bandys 1

The Red Devils kept their perfect mark in Catawba Valley 2A play with a one-goal victory against the Trojans.

Douglas Palma and Franklin Wepner scored goals for the Red Devils (5-2-1, 3-0-0). Newton-Conover is ranked No. 11 in the state in 2A boys soccer.

Bandys (3-6, 2-2) was led by Emilio Torres, who pocketed his team's only goal.

South Iredell 5, Bunker Hill 1

The Bears dropped a tough game to the Vikings on Thursday.

South Iredell, No. 13 in the state, improves to 7-1-2 overall and 4-0 CVAC play. Bunker Hill falls to 3-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

West Caldwell 10, Maiden 1

The Warriors won by nine goals against the Blue Devils on Thursday.

West Caldwell moves to 4-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the CVAC, while Maiden falls to 0-7 overall and 0-4 in the Catawba Valley 2A.
