PREP NOTEBOOK: Maiden falls in 5 to South Iredell

Maiden lost to South Iredell on the volleyball court Thursday in five sets in a battle of top teams in the CVAC 22-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21 and 13-15.

Mckenzie Garrison led the Lady Blue Devils (12-4, 8-2) with 29 kills and three blocks. Kha Xiong added 11 kills and two blocks.

Defensively, Rachel Cook tallied seven blocks for Maiden.

South Iredell improves to 12-2 overall and 10-0 in the Catawba Valley 2A.

Fred T. Foard 3, Watauga 1

The Lady Tigers picked up a big conference win, topping the Lady Pioneers on the road Thursday 23-25, 25-22, 25-23 and 27-25.

Madison Hayes led Foard (15-5, 6-2) with eight kills. Morgan Smith added six kills and 22 digs.

Also for the Lady Tigers, Rebecca Scott made 20 assists and Kaitlyn Sigmon tallied four aces and 21 digs.

Newton-Conover 3, East Burke 1

The Lady Red Devils picked up a conference win at home against the Lady Cavaliers on Thursday 25-17, 25-21, 18-25 and 25-17.

Newton-Conover improves to 5-12 overall and 4-6 in the CVAC.

Bandys 3, West Caldwell 0

The Lady Trojans defeated the Lady Warriors in three-straight sets on Thursday 25-17, 25-14 and 25-9.

Kayla Champion led Bandys (7-10, 6-4) with seven kills, 10 aces and two digs. Sierra Brotherton added seven kills, three aces and three blocks.

St. Stephens 3, Alexander Central 0

The Lady Indians took sole possession of the first place in the Northwestern 3A/4A with a straight-sets victory against the Lady Cougars on Thursday 27-25, 25-18 and 25-17.

Marisa Jones led Saint (17-1, 8-1) with nine kills, while Jenna Boliek tallied seven kills.

Bunker Hill 3, Draughn 0

The Lady Bears moved into a tie for fourth place in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference with a three-set victory over the Lady Wildcats on Thursday 27-25, 25-21 and 25-21.

Chyenne Pump led Bunker Hill (6-12, 5-5) with 13 kills, while Chelsey Lam made 21 digs defensively.

Newton-Conover 3, East Burke 1

The Red Devils took a 2-1 lead in the first half and never looked back, eventually picking up a conference victory over the Cavaliers on Thursday.

Alan Esperilla, Franklin Wepner and Eli Cordes each scored goals for Newton-Conover (7-3-1, 5-1-0).

John Tate and Cesar Lara had assists for Newton-Conover.

Ashbrook 2, Fred T. Foard 1

The Tigers lost a road contest to the Green Wave on Thursday.

Mario Carillo scored the lone goal for Foard (11-3-1, 2-2-1).

Bunker Hill 2, Draughn 0

The Bears picked up a shutout victory in conference soccer on Thursday against the Wildcats.

Richard Xiong and Ulises Clemente each scored a goal for Bunker Hill (5-4-1, 3-2-0).

Omar Chavez recorded the shut out in goal for the Bears, saving three shots.

Draughn falls to 0-12 overall and 0-6 in the CVAC.

West Caldwell 3, Bandys 0

The Trojans were shut out at home by the Warriors on Thursday.

Bandys falls to 4-7 overall and 3-3 in the CVAC.

South Iredell 9, Maiden 0

The Blue Devils lost a conference contest on the road Thursday to the Vikings.

Maiden falls to 0-9 overall and 0-6 in the Catawba Valley 2A.
