PREP NOTEBOOK: LRDs open title defense with loss

The defending 2A state volleyball champion Newton-Conover Lady Red Devils opened their season with a loss Thursday at North Iredell, 25-12, 25-6 and 25-10.

The Lady Red Devils (1-0) play again this Saturday at Davidson College's volleyball tournament.

Maiden 3, Alexander Central 1

The Lady Blue Devils shook off a loss against St. Stephens to pick up a victory against the Cougars, 25-15, 20-25, 30-28 and 25-12.

McKenzie Garrison led Maiden (2-1) with 18 kills, while Morgan Huffman added nine kills. Defensively, Rachel Houston recorded three blocks. Hannah Martin tallied 11 assists and Kalie Johnson had 15 assists.

South Caldwell 3, Bunker Hill 2

The Lady Spartans picked up a road victory against the Lady Bears on Thursday in Claremont, 16-25, 25-18, 25-23, 13-25, 15-9.

Megan Fair led Bunker Hill (0-3) with 16 kills and 24 digs, while Chyenne Pump added 17 digs and 12 kills. Krissy Helms also assisted on 18 Bunker Hill kills.

St. Stephens 3, South Iredell 1

The Lady Indians improved to 3-0 with a four-game victory over the home Lady Vikings, 25-13, 25-11, 16-25 and 25-12.

Marissa Jones led Saint with nine kills and five aces. Breanna Hall added seven kills and five blocks, while Jenna Boliek recorded six kills and 15 digs.

Defensively, the Lady Indians' Ashley Markland tallied 24 digs, while Katelyn Houser and Bailey Cloninger assisted on 16 Lady Indian kills each.

Prep soccer

Fred T. Foard 4, Freedom 0

The Tigers claimed the championship at the Freedom Soccer Invitational tournament.

Leading Foard (3-0) were Daniel Tomberlin, Kenan Ruffner, Zach Durham and Wyatt Shely, who each pocketed a goal in the game.

Scott Whitman also had two assists for the Tigers, while Mario Carrillo and Daniel Bolick also had an assist each.

Statesville 2, St. Stephens 1

Despite a goal by sophomore Luke Bruce, the Indians fell against the Greyhounds.
