Newton is without water; N-CCS cancel classes

Staff Writer

A broken primary trunk water line on Northwest Boulevard has forced the City of Newton to turn off water service citywide. Crews are working now to isolate the line and make repairs as quickly as possible.

Periods of low or no pressure in the distribution system increases the potential for back siphonage and introduction of bacteria into the water system.

As a precaution, Newton water customers are asked to boil water before use. The Division of Water Resources advises that when water is restored consumers boil all water used for human consumption (including drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation) or use bottled water.

Vigorous boiling for one (1) minute should kill any disease-causing organisms that may be present in the water.

The City of Newton informed Newton-Conover City School officials that the broken primary trunk water line on Northwest Boulevard has forced the City of Newton to turn off water service citywide.

With no water service to 4 of the 7 schools, N-CCS's maintenance department, food services department, central services, and Pre-K, N-CCS will unfortunately be forced to cancel classes for ALL students today, January 27th, 2016. Additionally, today will be an optional workday for staff.

The O-N-E will have more on this story.
