N. Carolina Sen. Tillis names Starling next chief of staff

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — An attorney for U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis while he was North Carolina House speaker and for the past year on Capitol Hill is Tillis' next top aide.

Ray Starling will become Tillis' chief of staff starting Friday.

A recent email to the senator's staff members announced the change. Starling succeeds John Mashburn, a North Carolina native and longtime Senate staffer who took the job as Tillis joined the Senate in early 2015.

The email says Mashburn is returning to the private sector.

Starling was general counsel for the state speaker's office before coming to Washington with Tillis to be his general counsel and senior policy adviser. Starling previously worked as a state Department of Agriculture attorney. He graduated from North Carolina State University and the UNC law school.
