Johnson tries to set record with fourth All-Star win

Jimmie Johnson enters this weekend’s Sprint All-Star Race with not only the points lead, but a chance to make history.

The driver of the No. 48 Hendrick Chevrolet will try to win his record fourth All-Star trophy, and in the process, surpass Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon and the late Dale Earnhardt for most victories at the event.

Johnson has won the All-Star Race in 2003, 2006 and 2012.

Only one man has ever managed to repeat as the All-Star Race champion — Davey Allison in 1991 and 1992.

“It means a lot,” said Johnson of his three wins at the All-Star gala. “Now, it’s got a million more reasons if you are able to win all the segments. It’s a huge payday. It’s fun to race without points and that sets you up for a nice Memorial (Day) weekend and a good starting point with your race car.”

While Johnson tries to enter the record books yet again, another driver has his sights on spoiling that potential feat by winning the 29th All-Star exhibition race on Saturday night in Concord.

Matt Kenseth, who won last Saturday night’s Southern 500 at Darlington Speedway, is considered by many to be the All-Star favorite and claim his second checkered flag in the race.

“The All-Star Race at Charlotte is a really fun weekend,” Kenseth said. “It seems like that type of race track has been one of our strong suits so far this year with wins at Kansas and Vegas. It’s always a fun week for the crew, and it’s great to be home in Charlotte for a few weeks. The fans get the chance to visit all the race shops and check out all the racing action for the two weekends, as well. I’m looking forward to a fun night Saturday, and then we’ll prepare for my favorite race of the year next weekend, the Coca-Cola 600.”

Sprint Cup drivers will spend the next two weeks in Concord, including the All-Star race weekend, as well as the annual Memorial Day tradition of the Coca-Cola 600.
