Indians wrestling perfect at RS Central

The St. Stephens wrestling team finished 2010 with a bang.

The Indians were a perfect 5-0 record at the RS Central Duals on Saturday. They defeated McDowell (62-15), West Henderson (62-9), Chase (46-24), Polk County (55-24) and tournament host RS Central (65-15).

Not only was their record impressive, but so were the milestones of two individuals on the team.

Coach Billy Baker reached his 350th career win on the last dual of the day against Polk County.

Of those victories, 317 came at the helm of St. Stephens, where he spent 12 seasons as coach. He holds a .749 win percentage with the Indians.

The other 33 victories came during a five-year tenure as coach at Lincolnton High School.

Also, reaching a milestone was wrestler Blake Rogers, who picked up his 25th career victory on the mat Saturday. The win came on a pin-fall against RS Central's Dylan Hemphill at 0:32 in the first period.

The milestones come in a season that produced many others. Ray Farnsworth won his 150th career match Dec. 12 at the Morehead Holiday Classic.

Alex Pollard won his 100th match in a Dec. 7 win against East Burke. Bradley Bader, Dillon Lail, Ian Martin, Jon Holloway all picked up their 15th career win in December.

The Indians had many impressive performances at the RS Central meet.

Among those were four Indians who were 5-0 at the match. These included Farnsworth in the 125-pound class; Martin in the 140-pound class; Lail in the 145-pound class; and Holloway in the 152-pound class.

Five other Indian grapplers had a 4-1 record at the Duals.

The victory at the Duals gives St. Stephens a 15-3 overall record. They trail Fred T. Foard in the Northwestern 4A/3A Conference. The Tigers hold a 14-0 record.

Matches in the conference start Jan. 11.
