Hickory falls to Cherryville in 13 innings, 17-14

After 13 innings of a seesaw slugfest in American Legion Area IV baseball between Hickory Post 48 and Cherryville Post 100, it was the road team that stood tall.

Post 100 scored three runs in the top of the 13th inning to come away with the 17-14 victory over Post 48.

Hickory rallied down 11-3 after three innings to tie the contest and send the game into extra innings.

Coach Fore Rembert said he was pleased with his team's effort despite the disappointing loss.

"The kids never quit," Rembert said. "I love them all. We are very good and very focused for our age."

With the win, Cherryville improves to 20-4 overall and 11-3 in the Area IV Western Division. Hickory falls to 14-4 overall and 10-3 in the West standings.

Caldwell County is also 11-3 (18-3 overall) in the West Division after sweeping Rutherford County in a home doubleheader Friday — 16-6 and 3-1.

Hickory, Cherryville and Caldwell County each have one game remaining in the regular season — Hickory at Rutherford County, Rock Hill (S.C.) at Cherryville and Lincoln County at Caldwell County.

Following those games, all of the teams in Area IV meet Sunday at 3 p.m. in Hickory to decide the pairings for the Area IV tournament, which starts Tuesday.
