Early voting starts today

NEWTON, NC – Elections will be held November 7, 2017 for the following Municipality and School Board races: Town of Brookford Mayor and Aldermen; Town of Catawba Councilmen; City of Claremont Mayor and Councilmen; City of Conover Mayor and Councilmen; City of Hickory Mayor and Aldermen Wards 4, 5, and 6; Town of Long View Mayor and Aldermen Wards 2, 4, and 5; Town of Maiden Mayor and Councilmen; City of Newton Council; Hickory School Wards 1, 2, 3, and 5; and Newton-Conover City Schools’ Newton and Conover Districts. Hickory and Long View residents of Burke County must vote in Burke County.

Precinct polling locations will be open for residents of municipalities and city schools from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. and will have a marked 50-foot buffer zone concerning electioneering. The following twenty-nine polling places will be open: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 22, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40. Municipal residents in precincts 9, 23, 24, 27 and 29 vote at alternate locations as listed below.

Qualified municipal residents in the following precincts will (for municipal elections only) vote at the following locations instead of their usual polling place:
· East Maiden (Pct 9) will vote at Maiden Community Center
· Mt. View 1 (Pct 23) and Mt. View 2 (Pct 24) will vote at Brookford Town Hall
· Oxford (Pct 27) will vote at Claremont City Hall
· St. Stephens 2 (Pct 29) will vote at St. Stephens Lutheran Church ELCA (beside CVS)

Absentee voting by mail will be allowed. Requests for an absentee ballot must be submitted using a state authorized request form and received in the Catawba County Board of Elections office by 5:00 p.m. on October 31, 2017. Ballots will be mailed by the Board of Elections office beginning October 9 and ending October 31.

Election Board Members will meet at 8:15 a.m. on October 17, 24, and 31; at 5:00 p.m. November 6; and at other times as may be necessary for the purpose of approving absentee ballot applications pursuant to G.S. 163.230.1(c1). Other business may be transacted by the board at this time. Canvass for the municipal election will be November 17, 2017 at 11:00 a.m.

One-stop absentee voting will begin at 8:00 a.m. Thursday, October 19 and end at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4 at two locations:
· Newton Main Library, 115 West ‘C’ St, Newton – Main One-Stop Location (in lieu of elections office)
· Highland Recreation Center, 1451 8th St Dr NE, Hickory – Satellite One-Stop Location

One-stop voting is open weekdays from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 4. One-stop voting is closed October 21 and 28.

Municipal and city schools residents who are not registered to vote must register on or before 5:00 p.m. October 13, 2017 to be eligible to vote on election day. Same-day registration at a one-stop site will be permitted. Any voter who has moved outside his or her precinct but within the county since the last election should submit a new registration/change of address form to the Board of Elections by October 13, 2017.
