Davis named assistant AD, steps down from coaching

The gym at St. Stephens High School will have a new floor next school year, and after Monday, a new girls basketball coach.

Todd Davis, who has coached the Lady Indians in each of the past 13 seasons, stepped down on Monday to take a new position as assistant athletic director at the school.

Davis also coached the varsity girls tennis team this past season.

“Todd Davis is a dedicated educator who has served the St. Stephens community for 17 years both here and at Arndt Middle School,” said St. Stephens Principal Jeff Taylor in an email to local media. “His knowledge of athletics and the relationships he has formed during that time make him a tremendous asset to our athletic department as we begin a new year under new leadership. I appreciate Todd’s integrity as a person and his willingness to serve our school in this capacity.”

Davis will serve under Jim Woodruff, who recently came out of a one-year retirement to replace Amy Rucker as athletic director.

Davis started his coaching career at Fred T. Foard High School in 1995, leading the boys junior varsity basketball program.

Davis also had stints as an Arndt Middle assistant boys basketball coach from 1996-97, Arndt’s boys basketball head coach from 1998-99 and St. Stephens’ junior varsity boys basketball coach in 2000.

In 2001, Davis was named the head coach of the girls varsity basketball program at St. Stephens High School.

Davis’ wife, Jan, coaches the varsity softball team at St. Stephens. He helped assist her with the Lady Indians program.

According to Taylor’s email, the search for a new girls basketball coach will start immediately and that any interested persons in the position should contact Woodruff at the high school.

Davis is the third head coach in a varsity boy sport to be replaced at St. Stephens, joining Chip Watts (baseball) and Chris Bunting (football).

Watts stepped down last week to take an assistant principal job at Mill Creek, while Bunting resigned on Feb. 11 to take an assistant coaching job in Clover, S.C.

Wayne Hicks was hired to replace Bunting, and no replacement has been hired yet for Watts.
