Bandys' Harvey expected to sign with O's next week

Bandys' Hunter Harvey is expecting to sign a contract with the Baltimore Orioles next week and start his journey through the minor league system.

The 6-foot-3 pitcher was taken No. 22 overall by the Orioles in last Thursday's Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.

Harvey said on Wednesday that he expects to be the last of the 41 players drafted by Baltimore to sign their deal.

"They said they are signing me last," Harvey said of the Orioles plans for his contract.

Of the players drafted by the Orioles, 13 of them come from the high schools ranks, including the top three — Harvey (22nd overall), outfielder Josh Hart (37th overall) and catcher Chance Sisco (61st overall).

Harvey's slot value for a signing bonus at the 22nd pick is $1,947,600.

However, the value of that bonus could increase and probably will after a few other recent first round signings.

Texas Rangers first round pick and Oral Roberts pitcher Alex Gonzalez, who was taken No. 23 overall, inked a $2,215,000 signing bonus on Tuesday.

That number is just above Gonzalez's slot value of $1,920,600.

Five first round picks have signed with their respective teams so far, including Kansas City's Hunter Dozier (No. 8 overall), St. Louis' Marco Gonzales (No. 19), Texas' Gonzalez, Oakland's Billy McKinney (No. 24) and Cincinnati's Phillip Ervin (No. 27).

Two compensatory picks have also signed.

Players and teams have until July 12 at 5 p.m. EST to come to terms on an agreement.

If the organization does not come to terms with a player drafted in the first or second rounds, they will be awarded a pick in the next year's draft one slot higher than the previous year.

Harvey is represented by agent Danny Horwits, of the Beverly Hills Sports Bureau.

Horwits represents several Major League players, including Chicago Cubs outfielder David DeJesus and pitcher Kevin Gregg, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mike Leake and outfielder Ryan Ludwick and Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Octavio Dotel.

Overall, the Beverly Hill Sports Bureau represents 42 Major and Minor League baseball players.

After Harvey signs, he is expected to start his journey to the major leagues with the Gulf Coast League Orioles in Sarasota, Fla.
