Attacking dogs euthanized

Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield's five dogs were euthanized after attacking a postal worker.

The labrador and pit bull mix dogs were euthanized April 28, which was a week after the incident. Catawba County Animal Services Manager Jay Blatche said Mayfield authorized the death of the five dogs.

Mary Bolton, 32, a postal worker for the Catawba Post Office, was delivering a package April 21 to the front door of Mayfield's residence, 6397 Hudson Chapel Road in Catawba. Catawba Fire Chief Don Robinson previously told The O-N-E that as Bolton approached the home, she was attacked by one dog, then four others also attacked her. Bolton was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Catawba Interim Police Chief M. Nash said Monday he spoke to Bolton a week ago, and she is "healing and taking care of her wounds."

Nash said no charges are filed in the incident, but the case's paperwork was submitted to the District Attorney's Office for review.
