Matt Williams is making it three Catawba County high schools in as many years.
Williams, who played quarterback at Hickory High last season and for St. Stephens High the year prior, has transferred to Fred T. Foard High School for his senior season.
He follows current Foard coach Tom Harper from the Red Tornadoes to the Tigers.
Williams passed for more yardage (1,588) than any quarterback in Catawba County last fall.
He also ran for 655 yards and scored 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Williams’ 12 passing touchdowns were second most in the county behind Maiden’s Jake McRee.
During his sophomore season at Saint, Williams threw for 887 yards, ran for another 497 and scored 12 touchdowns (six passing, six rushing).
Williams arrival at Foard creates a cluster at the quarterback position.
Jacob Schmidt started under center last season for Foard, tallying 380 passing yards and four touchdowns.
The Tigers’ Jackson Bass also got some playing time last season under center.
Williams said he has a close relationship with Schmidt after playing travel basketball together.
Williams anticipates he will play quarterback, and that Schmidt will serve in a running back capacity.
“That is what Jacob and I are hoping,” Williams said. “We have known each other for a long time, and are looking forward to playing on a team with each other. We have become pretty good friends, but I am excited about this year.”
