A Norfolk Southern freight train collided with a passenger car just before noon, Tuesday at the same rail crossing where a vehicle was struck last Thursday.
According to Conover police officials, the driver of a white Chevrolet Impala was crossing the railroad on 2nd Avenue Place SE after leaving Southern Furniture Company and was struck by an eastbound freight train loaded with gravel.
The Chevrolet was dragged more than 600 feet until the rear wheels of the passenger car struck a mound of asphalt pavement where 26th Street. The car was then thrown clear of the train and came to a rest on North Rankin Avenue in Newton.
“I heard the train coming down the track and it sounded odd, like it had a flat spot on one of the wheels,” Newton resident Lin Couch said. “I looked up to see the car come off the front of the train and land against the gravel.”
