The Newton City Council on Tuesday recognized Addie Shuford as the 2013 Unity Award recipient. Mayor Anne P. Stedman presented Shuford with the plaque recognizing her contributions to the city.
The award recognizes a Newton resident, business or industry that has contributed to racial and cultural harmony in the city of Newton.
Shuford is known throughout the city as a volunteer for the Newton-Conover City School System, the kitchen manager at Market Basket and an employee at Bassett Furniture.
Shuford graduated from Newton-Conover High School in 1979. She has worked and volunteered for the school system for 17 years in the ACT program, as a substitute teacher, coach of the Step Team, co-chair of Project Graduation and as Football Mom from 2003 to 2007 for the Newton-Conover High School football team. She has served as the Bandy’s High School Football Mom since 2009.
