Behind Chaniece Moss’ goal on an Abby Cox assist, the Newton-Conover girls soccer team advanced to the fourth round of the 2A playoffs on Wednesday.
The Lady Red Devils defeated Owen 1-0 in Black Mountain.
Moss’ goal came at the seven-minute mark of the first half, and a stingy LRD defense held on for the one-goal shutout.
“We started off fast-paced and pressured them a lot,” said N-C coach Angelo Palozzi. “Chaniece got a nice ball from Abby. The rest of the half was back and forth. Both teams had chances. In the second half, Owen came out harder, putting a lot of pressure on us, and we were able to maintain the ball. They got a penalty kick and shot it wide, thankfully.”
Goalkeeper Taylor Petty recorded 11 saves, including a block on a late penalty kick by Owen's Nessi Pommeranz, to preserve the shutout victory for Newton-Conover (21-1-1).
“Overall, our girls played extremely hard,” Palozzi said. “We’re ready to play another game.”
Owen finishes its season with a 17-2-3 record.
The Lady Red Devils now face South Iredell (20-2) in the fourth round of the 2A soccer playoffs on Saturday in Troutman.
This will be the third time the two teams have met on the soccer field this season.
South Iredell won 4-1 on March 27, but N-C returned the favor on April 25 by handing the Lady Vikings a 1-0 defeat, snapping their 53-game CVAC win streak.
