The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team had its season ended on Friday in Toledo, Ohio, but not before making some history first.
The 14th-seeded Lady Bucs won their first-ever National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Div. II Tournament game with a straight-sets victory (27-25, 31-29, 25-11) against No. 6 Moraine Valley Community College.
Jen Beatty led CVCC in the win with 18 kills, while Leah Wells added nine kills.
After falling 3-1 to Parkland (23-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22) in the opening match of the tournament on Thursday, the Lady Bucs were put in a position where they needed to continue to win in order to survive in the double-elimination tournament.
Facing No. 7 Phoenix College in the semifinals, the Lady Bucs were unable to keep their tournament run going, falling in four sets — 25-15, 23-25, 25-15 and 25-19.
Beatty once again led the Lady Bucs with 12 kills, while Wells chipped in seven kills.
CVCC ends its season with a 35-2 overall record, finishing in 11th place at the NJCAA Div. II Tournament.
