Behind two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Chris Montgomery, the Burns Bulldogs eliminated Hickory from the 3A playoffs for the second-straight season, 28-13, in Kings Mountain on Friday.
The Bulldogs (10-3), who advance to the regional quarterfinals for the third time in the past four years, host Freedom (12-1) in the 3A third round next Friday.
Burns led 14-6 at halftime behind a two-yard touchdown run from Tylan Ruff and an 88-yard fumble recovery by defensive lineman Damerrian Petty.
Senior wide receiver Daniel Davis had the only score of the first half for the Red Tornadoes on a 41-yard pass from quarterback Matt Williams.
Montgomery’s two second-quarter touchdown runs of 41 and 9 yards gave the Bulldogs a commanding 28-6 halftime edge.
Williams added a seven-yard TD with 1:32 left in the game for the final score.
The Red Tornadoes finish the 2012 campaign — their first under coach Tom Harper — with a 8-5 overall record.
