A group of first grade students from Tuttle Elementary reached out to U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan this week. Mrs. Williams, a first grade teacher at Tuttle Elementary partnered with Catawba County Schools Rachel’s Challenge project, and volunteered her students needed to do a kindness project.
“A little girl in my class, her dad has been gone and will be gone another year to Afghanistan so we chose her dad and his platoon do send care boxes to,” Williams said.
The students in her class started three weeks ago preparing to send the boxes to the soldiers once they learned there were 80 to 100 men who served in the unit. Williams said the idea started when she met with the little girl’s mother for a parent-teacher conference.
“The kids have been so eager and wanted to remind their parents to go shopping to get their items for the boxes,” Williams said. “They wanted to know what the soldiers where doing and why they were away from their families and were always asking a lot of questions.”
