Sunday’s 10th Anniversary Greater Hickory Classic added another page to its historic run as an annual event on the Champions Tour.
That end result has Executive Tournament Director Jim Correll excited about the GHC’s future.
“We are going to utilize this (tournament) as a catalyst,” he said. “I cannot tell you how much (Fred Funk’s) victory is going to catapult us to future years. This is kind of magic.”
Funk, who is one of the most well known names in golf, won Sunday’s event with a 15-under-par score, edging underdog Duffy Waldorf by a stroke for the title.
Correll said Funk’s win helps give the Greater Hickory Classic an advantage in being added back to the Champions Tour’s 2013 schedule because of Funk’s relationship with sponsors and the area.
“Duffy Waldorf is a great guy. I had breakfast with him Sunday morning. He would have made a great champion, but to have Fred Funk win this event, you can’t imagine how positive that is,” Correll said. “Here we are looking to continue the tournament and have another 10 years. For Fred, who is close to the Kia people and close to this community, I just can’t tell you how excited I am to have Fred Funk win this event.”
