As the Catawba County Animal Shelter reaches capacity, Catawba County Board of Commissioners are working to construct a new facility.
“The capacity has reached as high as 259 animals,” Emergency Services Director Bryan Blanton said. “The problem is when you have animals that close diseases can spread and there is a safety issue.”
Blanton said the original shelter was built in 1985 with an additional add-on in 2005 that houses the animals that reportedly bit people. The county is now in the process of building a whole new facility. With finalizations on building specifications, the project continues to move forward.
