A 39-yard field goal by Alex Parsons as time expired gave Watauga a stunning 28-27 victory against Fred T. Foard during the Tigers' Homecoming game on Friday.
Training 18-0 early in the contest, the Tigers (2-3, 0-1) rallied behind Sam Benfield and Jacob Schmidt in the second half to nearly pull the comeback win.
Benfield scored on runs of 55 and 37 yards, while Schmidt ran for a 37-yard score and threw for a 41-yard touchdown to Brenden Purkey.
Benfield finished the game with 18 carries for 192 rushing yards, part of a 330-yard rushing performance by the Tigers.
Foard also totaled 412 total yards of offense in the contest.
Schmidt's touchdown run late poised the Tigers to start 1-0 in conference play for the first time since 2008.
However, Parsons' kick split the uprights as the buzzer sounded, helping the Pioneers improve to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
