The Maiden football team pulled out to a 21-0 halftime lead and never looked back on its way to a 28-7 victory against St. Stephens in Hickory on Friday.
Wide receiver Jose Campos made the first two scores of the game for the Blue Devils (2-2), including a 77-yard run on offense and an 88-yard interception return for another score on defense.
Blue Devil quarterback Jake McRee added a 41-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Taylor before halftime to give Maiden its three-touchdown lead.
McRee added his first rushing score in the fourth quarter — a two-yard run — which were the Blue Devil's last points of the game.
Down four scores, the Indians (0-4) refused to be shut out.
Saint quarterback Marvin Sutton scored his first touchdown of the season with a run from two yards out in the fourth quarter — the final score of the contest.
Maiden starts conference play against rival Newton-Conover (2-2) next Friday, while St. Stephens tries for its first win against Northwestern 3A/4A rival Alexander Central (1-3).
Hickory 32, North Gaston 20
Down 20-19 at halftime, the Hickory High School football team rallied around running back Corey Stinson to come away with the 32-20 win against North Gaston.
Stinson tallied 11 carries for 254 yards and four touchdowns, including runs of 57, 54, 66 and 29 yards.
Stinson's final score 37 seconds into the fourth quarter helped Hickory retake the lead.
Fellow running back Jordan Lockhart made a late three-yard scoring run in the game that helped propel the Red Tornadoes to their third win.
Hickory travels to Winston-Salem Reagan (3-1) next Friday night.
