HAGERSTOWN, MD. — Hagerstown stretched its advantage in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division to 1.5 games over the Hickory Crawdads with a dramatic 4-3 walkoff win in the bottom of the ninth on Tuesday.
Trailing 3-1 entering the ninth inning, Hickory (27-24 in the second half, 64-56 overall) tied the contest up on a pair of RBI singles from Jorge Alfaro and Alejandro Selen.
Trying to preserve the tie, the 'Dads switched pitchers to start the bottom of the ninth, sending in Santo Perez for Taylor Dennis.
After retiring Suns leadoff batter Justin Miller, Perez gave up a single to Brett Newsome in right field followed by the game-winning RBI on a double to left field by J.R. Higley.
The win improves the Suns to 28-22 in the second half and 70-49 overall. They lead the Northern Division by a half-game over the West Virginia Power. Hickory is in third place one game behind the Power.
The 'Dads try to cut their deficit in the Northern Divison back to a half-game when they play the Suns for the third and final game of the series Wednesday in Maryland.
Hickory returns to L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday for its final weekend series of the season against the Savannah Sand Gnats. Game time Thursday is set for 7 p.m.
