Newton-Conover won the 2A Western Regional championship in girls track and field Saturday at Polk County High School.
The Lady Red Devils scored 67 points, which edged Draughn's 55 points to claim to regional title.
Sadasia Tipps led Newton-Conover with atitle in the long jump. She also finished second in the triple jump.
N-C's Zariyah Moss also earned a title in the 100-meter dash, while finishing fourth in the 200-meter dash.
Bandys also had several strong finishes, including a first place in the 400-meter dash by Brittany Moss and a first place in the 4x200-meter relay team.
Bandys finished sixth in the competition with 46, Bunker Hill was 13th with 22 points and Maiden came in 18th with 14.5 points.
In boys competition, Shelby took the championship with 88.5 points, beating East Lincoln by 3.5 points.
Newton-Conover was the highest finishing county team in seventh place with 45 points. Maiden was ninth with 32 points, while Bunker Hill was 11th with 27 points.
The Red Devils' best performance came in the relay events, where they took a title in the 4x100-meter event, a second in the 4x200-meter relay and a sixth in the 4x400-meter team relay.
The lone individual title was scored by Maiden's Isaiah Henderson, while teammate Ian Oliver finished in second place.
N-C duo takes Regional doubles title
The Newton-Conover tennis pair of Ryan Lampe and John Tate added to their Catawba Valley 2A doubles title with a 2A Western Regional crown Saturday at Brevard High School.
Lampe and Tate won four matches to take the crown, including the title match against No. 2 Miles Poage and Joseph Hendrick, of Shelby, 6-0, 6-3.
Maiden's Zack Huffman also finished fourth in individual competition at the event.
With their top-four finishes Saturday, the trio of Lampe, Tate and Huffman advance to next week's state tournament in Cary.
Spartans top Red Tornadoes in NWC baseball final
South Caldwell on the Northwestern 3A/4A baseball championship Saturday at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls.
The Spartans held Hickory to just three hits and no runs in their 4-0 victory.
Pitcher Spencer Greer led South Caldwell with a complete game performance that included four strikeouts, no walks and no earned runs.
Lenoir-Rhyne falls in Div. II regional final
The Lady Bears softball team fell to Flagler 9-7 in the NCAA Div. II Southeast Regional title game on the campus of Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Jessica Fellmeth led L-R with three hits and four RBIs.
Lenoir-Rhyne ends the season with a 48-13 record, while Flagler plays North Georgia (48-8) in the NCAA Div. II Southeast Super Regional next Friday.
