The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team ended its regular season Wednesday night with a 78-68 win over Guilford Technical Community College at the Tarlton Complex.
Guilford (10-19, 4-11) pressured CVCC (14-16, 8-8) into a number of early turnovers. The Titans took an 11-10 lead within the first 10 minutes on a lay-up by sophomore guard DeAndre Gandy.
That marked the Titan's only lead of the game.
Freshman guard Preston Earle helped to grow CVCC's lead to 30-16 on a three-pointer with 3:52 left in the first half. The Bucs carried a 37-29 lead into the locker room.
CVCC led by as many as 16 points in the second half before Guilford returned to the full-court press in the closing minutes to help get within 10.
Titans freshman guard Sean Deniton, fouled while shooting a three-pointer, missed all three free throws that would have cut the Buccaneers' lead to eight points with 55.4 seconds left.
Earle scored the first 10 points for the Buccaneers. He led all scorers with 27 points. Point guard Terrence Polk was the team's only other player in double figures with 17 points. Polk was also the team's leading rebounder (8).
Gandy paced Guilford with 22 points. Brendon Pennix added 14 points and seven rebounds.
CVCC hosts the Region X District 15 tournament on March 8-11. The Bucs' opponent, game date and time have yet to be determined.
