A boater lost part of his leg Friday morning, after he was thrown from his boat near Lake Norman Marina in Catawba County.
A 33-year-old man was on a boat alone at about 11 a.m. Friday when he made a sharp turn that threw him out of the boat, said Keith Bost, chief for Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue. Bost said the boat was then unmanned and going in circles in the water.
He said the unidentified man tried to dive down to avoid the boat's prop, but his legs got tangled in the motor's part.
"He had a lot of damage to his left leg, and it was partially amputated from the knee down," Bost said. "The right leg had a lot of damage, too."
Bost said the man was airlifted from the Marshal Steam Plant and taken to Carolinas Medical Center's Trauma Center.
North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission responded to the scene.
