Police are investigating a reported break-in after a thief made off with money from a popular area restaurant.
An employee of Geppeto's Pizza and More in Newton unlocked the downtown Newton restaurant Thursday at about 9 a.m. to find the cash register in disarray, said Newton Police Department Lt. M.D. Beal.
The employee called 9-1-1, and police arrived on the scene minutes later. After searching the building, investigators determined an unknown suspect gained access to the restaurant by prying open the back door.
Beal said the suspect, once inside the restaurant, "busted open" the safe and stole an undisclosed sum of money.
Beal declined to comment about how many suspects police think were involved in the break-in, saying only that the investigation is ongoing.
No arrests were made in the incident as of press time.
About $2,000 in property was damaged during the break-in, including damage to the back door where the unknown suspect gained entry.
The restaurant has surveillance cameras, but Deal wouldn't comment about whether the video footage captured images of suspects in the incident.
Geppeto's employees stood outside the restaurant Thursday on North College Avenue as police investigated the incident. They declined to comment about the break-in. The restaurant opened at 11:30 a.m. Thursday after investigators finished processing the crime scene.
Beal said the building was last secure about 10 p.m. Wednesday after employees closed the restaurant for the night.
