100 balloons floated in the kitchen of Annie Hass' Newton home as she celebrated another year of life. A few of them are still lingering around, reminding her of the milestone she has reached.
Hass was born June 27, 1914 and attended Mt. Olive School for much of her childhood. Once Balls Creek was built, Hass attended school there and graduated in 1931.
"When I was a little girl, it would take us two days to visit my cousins in Statesville," Hass said. "We went by horse and buggy. When we got to the bridge at the Catawba River, the horses wouldn't go across. Papa would have to get out and lead the horses across."
