The O-N-E represented at annual NCPA Awards

The Observer News Enterprise’s Sports Editor Cody Dalton received an award during the N.C. Press Association’s Annual Awards Ceremony held Thursday at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dalton earned second place for sports columns in the Daily Division, which includes newspapers with a circulation less than 15,000.

Second suspect in fatal home invasion identified, arrested

A tip lead Catawba County Sheriff’s Office deputies to the second suspect in a fatal home invasion that occurred Monday near Claremont — Brandon Lineberger.

Lineberger, 26,was arrested and charged on Wednesday in connection with the incident where alleged accomplice Vernon Bobby Dixon was shot and killed.

New planning director eager to return to Catawba Co.

"I'm eager to see what things are happening in Newton," said City of Newton's new Planning Director Randy Williams.

On Feb. 25, Williams officially took seat as the city's new Planning Director.

Williams, 53, first got a feel for the job that he's in now in 1991 when he began working with the City of Conover as their Director of Planning and Economic Development.

Truck overturns on slick roads

Snow-dusted roadways made for a slippery commute in Catawba County early Tuesday morning. Around 7 a.m., Conover Fire Department responded to a traffic accident on Conover Boulevard East near the intersection of Emmanuel Church Road where a red pickup truck had overturned down an embankment. When officials arrived on scene, the driver was entrapped in the vehicle.

Second Round of Snow

County school buses were dusted with a fluffy snow on Tuesday and were cautioned not to hit the roads. Around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday, parents received calls from area school systems announcing a two hour delay for students. As flakes began to fall across Catawba County, school was called off for the third day in two weeks due to inclement weather.

Claremont receives building reuse grant

The City of Claremont was recently awarded $240,000 in grant funds from the N.C. Department of Commerce.

The funds will be used toward the states Building Reuse Program and will support the reuse of a 10,000 sq. ft. building that owned by Prysmian Cables and Systems USA, LLC.

Suspect shot in fatal home invasion identified

Vernon Bobby Dixon has been identified by the Catawba County Sheriff's Office as the suspect who was shot and killed during a home breaking and entering on River Bend Road just north of Claremont on Monday.

Newton-Conover’s Ah’Ron Hope won a state title at 285 pounds on Saturday in Greensboro during the NCHSAA Individual State Wrestling tournament. The Red Devils also finished as team state runners up. For more, see Sports on Page 8 of the Tuesday Edition.

Child hit by car while waiting on school bus

On Monday morning, an 8-year-old male was struck by a car while waiting to catch the school bus, according to a release from Maiden Police.

At 6:59 a.m., police and emergency personnel responded to a call that a child had been struck by a vehicle in the 500 block of East Main Street in downtown Maiden.

Sheriff: Claremont homeowner shoots, kills intruder

A man was shot and killed after he attempted to break into a home at 7564 River Bend Road just north of Claremont Monday morning, Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said.

According to Reid, the homeowner heard someone in his basement around 9:25 a.m. The homeowner was on the phone with 911 to advise of a possible break-in when he heard the basement door being kicked in.
