Annual run honors principal, victims

April 16, 2014

A cloudy Monday morning became one of the brightest days of the year for students at Snow Creek Elementary School.

Students gathered under a blue and gold ballon arch to participate in their annual Runathon fundraiser, which was especially sentimental this year.

The run opened with a ceremony for Principal Dr. Walter Zahler, who will be retiring after this year.

Republican candidates collide in final forum

More than 200 Republican voters turned out at the Newton-Conover Auditorium on Tuesday night for the second of two Primary Candidates Forums.

Three races were featured during the event, including 96th District House of Representatives, Clerk of Court in Catawba County and the 25th District Attorney.

Four are added to Catawba County's sports hall

The Catawba County Sports Hall of Fame is expanding its membership by four this year.

The Class of 2014 for the county’s sports hall was officially announced during a press conference at the Highland Recreation Center on Monday in Hickory.

Among those joining the hall in its 14th class are Jeff Barkley, Odell Moose, Beth Laney Queen and John Lentz.

Sherrills Ford library construction well underway

The new branch of Catawba County Library on Sherrills Ford Road will soon be opening its doors.

The new branch is near the corner of Hwy 150 and Sherrils Ford Road, just a short distance from the current facility.

$16.8 million to be reinvested in community colleges

Governor Pat McCrory made his second stop in Catawba County this week with a tour alongside middle school students of the Manufacturing Solutions Center (MSC) and the simulated hospital at Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC).

McCrory’s visit came with an announcement that will impact the entire North Carolina Community College System.

Pinwheels for Prevention raises abuse awareness

The Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground glistened with the reflections of 2,000 pinwheels for prevention on Wednesday afternoon.

The pinwheel represents childlike notions and stands for the chance at the healthy, happy and full lives all children deserve, according to the Prevent Child Abuse America organization.

Compton receives life in prison for murder

A Granite Falls man was sentenced to life in prison on Monday after being accused of killing a Newton woman.

Aaron Obdee Compton, Jr., 50, pled guilty to first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, first-degree kidnapping, robbery with a dangerous weapon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

$40 million courthouse expansion continues

Construction is underway at the Catawba County Justice Center in Newton.

Workers are creating a temporary new entrance for the public to use while the expansion project takes place because the main entrance will be blocked off during that time.

International delegates tour Center in Conover

The Manufacturing Solutions Center (MSC) in Conover opened its doors to delegates from 19 different countries on Thursday.

The Americas Competitiveness Tour made its stop in Conover to showcase the innovation and partnerships that are happening under the roof of the MSC.

Reigning Teacher of the Year receives gift

A seventh grade language arts teacher at Maiden Middle School, Bethany Settlemyre, was selected as the Catawba County Schools Teacher of the Year for the 2012-13 school year.

She is still being recognized for her achievements.

Whitney Marti and Dan Hummert, of Hickory Mazda Mitsubishi, presented her with an award on Wednesday afternoon.

Victims receive checks from Ponzi scheme

After waiting more than five years since his initial arrest, victims of the J.V. Huffman and Biltmore Financial Group, Inc. Ponzi scheme have finally received their money — part of it, at least.

Joshua Vance “J.V.” Huffman, of Conover, was arrested on Nov. 7, 2008 after scamming close to 500 people out of approximately $25 million with his company.

Second annual event raises more than $3,000

The sound of a shotgun heard over pouring rain signaled the start of the second annual NC Troopers Footchase 5K and Fun Run in Conover on Saturday.

Nearly 300 participants gathered at the starting line at the new Conover City Park.

From elementary students to adults over 60, the community showed their support for the event which raised money for Catawba Regional Hospice.

Conover garden center gets a fresh look, new owners

Big ideas are blooming at the newly owned and renovated garden center in Conover.

Blooms, owned by Carmen and David Huffman, is located at 1604 Hwy 16 N. The center, formerly Greenwood Nursery, has been given a fresh coat of paint and filled with new supplies and smiling faces.

Pottery festival returning on Saturday

Fine art will be on display this weekend in Hickory.

The Catawba Valley Pottery and Antiques Festival will be held this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hickory Metro Convention Center.
