The Catawba County Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police hosted the fourth installment of its election year "Candidates Forum" on Monday September 15th.

This iteration allowed judicial candidates and candidate-elects an opportunity to address the organization and answer questions from the audience specifically geared towards concerns of the law enforcement community in the county.

BREAKING: Johnson not guilty on sex charges

Former Hickory High School basketball coach Shawn Johnson is innocent.

On Tuesday morning, Johnson was ruled not guilty on nine sex charges stemming from accusations from four different girls.

He had previously been arrested in 2012 at his home and was charged with 11 different sex crimes. However, due to lack of evidence, two of those crimes were dismissed earlier in Johnson's trial.

Students win national awards for art, history competition

When McKayla Coletti, 10, was drawing her rendition of the Liberty Bell for class, she had no idea it would be award-winning. The bell, complete with its famous crack, won Coletti a national first place award.

‘Your Best is Yet to Be’

"Maggie's saying was always, 'Your best is yet to be,'" said Phil Heath, president of the Newton-Conover High School Athletic Boosters. "We want to help students find that 'best.'"

Heath and the Athletic Boosters have created a scholarship fund in memory of Maggie Daniels, Discovery High School counselor who lost her life in June.

Newton 101 is a six week course aimed to enlighten students on the city's procedures and operations.

Challege Accepted

Last week, O-N-E editor Seth Mabry issued the Ice Bucket Challenge to Newton Fire Chief Kevin Yoder and North Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. Kelly Stewart. On Friday, they accepted the challenge, along with the rest of Newton’s fire department. The department gets doused while in front of a fire truck. Chief Yoder get the ice treatment. Sgt. Stewart is all smiles as he gets iced.

Storms cause wastewater spill in Conover

Storms that blew across Catawba County last weekend left a pump station in Conover out of commission.

A tree fell off Evans Street SE in Conover knocking down a power line and killing the main power source as well as the battery back-up powers for the pump station, according to Assistant Wastewater Supervisor Tony Parker.

Tyler Terry with Claremont Fire Department holds out the Flag of Honor that was flown in the city on Thursday in honor of 9/11. The flag is made up of the names of each individual that lost their life in the attacks of Sept. 11 2001, arranged in the pattern of an American Flag.

Raining Cats and Dogs

Sounds of joy emerge as soon as you walk in the door. The smell of bleach, puppy breath and cat littler overwhelm your senses. Your first reaction is to pick up one of the furry friends and hold them.

"They love attention," said Debbie McAlexander, a volunteer with the Catawba County Humane Society.

McAlexander has been working as a volunteer with the animals for a year and a half.

13th Annual Brad’s Southern Classics

Brad Wikes, owner of BPW Transport, invites the public to his 13th annual Brad’s Southern Classics Antique Truck Show. This year’s event will showcase antique trucks, engines, tractors, and other farm equipment. Also, Freightliner, Kenworth, and International Trucks will all have new trucks on display. Kiperly “Kip” Hall, in charge of registration, says most participants are local.
