'Avengers' sequel is second biggest US opener of all time

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Avengers are mighty, but not enough to beat themselves. The Marvel and Disney sequel earned a staggering $187.7 million in its debut weekend, making it the second biggest U.S. opening of all time according to Rentrak estimates Sunday.

But "Avengers: Age of Ultron" failed to top the all-time record of the first film's $207.4 million debut in 2012.

Britain's new princess is named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana

LONDON (AP) — It's a name that immediately evokes British royal history: Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

Prince William and his wife Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, on Monday announced the name they picked for Britain's newborn princess, a choice seen as a tribute to both Prince William's parents and grandmother, the queen, as well as a link to Kate's family.

Newton trio arrested for stealing, stealing again

On Tuesday, three Newton citizens were arrested at Walmart on Highway 70 in Hickory after stealing items, returning those items on a gift card, and then attempting to buy items with the gift card.

Newton church recognizes annual Youth Sunday

This upcoming Sunday, May 3, First Presbyterian Church of Newton will be observing their annual Youth Sunday.

"Youth Sunday is our regular worship service – just led by our youth group which consists of sixth graders to seniors in high school," said First Presbyterian's Senior Pastor, Steven Barnes.

Miller was the Assistant Finance Director at the City of Hickory for six years, until 2001, before moving to his current position with Catawba County, as the Finance Director, for the last 14 years.

Maiden student wins art competition

Congressman Patrick McHenry (R, NC-10) announced Evette Terhon Hernandez and Meghan Pressley as the winners of the 10th District's 2015 Congressional Art Contest. Evette's piece, "Little Patriot", was selected as the winner by a panel of judges from the 10th District. She is a junior at Maiden High School in Catawba County and studies art under teacher Elizabeth Taylor.

Foam-filled trailer burns at HSM

A tractor-trailer caught fire Tuesday afternoon at the Hickory Springs Manufacturing (HSM) Conover Complex.

The trailer was filled with foam, according to Conover Fire Chief Mark Hinson.

Two employees were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, Hinson said, but none were transported to the hospital as a result of the incident.

The trailer itself was a total loss, Hinson said.

Two Newton men face felony drug charges

Quantay Anthony Gaither, 32, of McKay Road in Newton was arrested by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday.

Gaither was charged with one count of felony possession with intent to sell, deliver marijuana, one count of felony possession of marijuana and one count of felony possession of cocaine.

Conover lumber fire caused by electrical box

At 4:03 a.m. on Tuesday, Conover Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire at Conover Lumber Company — a 70-year-old staple in the community.

The two-alarm blazed burned for several hours and firefighters were finally able to control the blaze around 5:30 a.m., according to Chief Mark Hinson.
