IRS scam hits Catawba County once again

If you've ever gotten a call from the IRS demanding money, you're not the only one.

Recently, local citizens who wished to remain anonymous told the O-N-E that they had seen the calls flooding in as well.

There's no need to be alarmed though.

Carolinas politicians get payouts from broker

Soon after taking office, North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory and U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford of South Carolina accepted six-figure stock payouts from an online mortgage broker accused by regulators of deceiving its customers.

Hwy. 10 wreck kills power at Startown

December 18, 2014

At approximately 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, an SUV travelling on Hwy. 10 near the Startown community ran off the road, striking a power pole. The pole landed on top of the vehicle. As a result of the accident, Startown Elementary School and surrounding area was without power for several hours. Power was restored around noon, according to several residents in the area.

According to Google, which released a report Tuesday on the top trending terms of the year, the top term overall was "Robin Williams," after the well-known and popular comedian died in August. No. 2 was "World Cup," the global soccer tournament held in Brazil in June. Third on the list was "Ebola," the highly contagious virus.

The project is a collaboration between Kevin Shea, Brian Vierling, Toby Tate, Chete Soto, Dan Loyer and Dave Walker, who have enjoyed coaching and playing soccer locally for years.

On the night of Oct. 16, shortly after movie-goers had their tickets torn and purchased their popcorn, the State Cinema shut its doors – seemingly for good.

The closing came suddenly with just a single Facebook post a few hours before the final show saying “State Cinema will be CLOSED after tonight's show. Thank you all for those of you that supported us.”

Champions for Cancer

Last week, St. Stephens High School continued a nearly two-decade tradition of creating awareness and raising funds for those afflicted by cancer.

The Indians hosted Bunker Hill on the basketball court for the 12th year in a row on Friday — the second and final meeting between the schools who were battling each other for not only a hoops win, but a victory for cancer.

Judge’s son killed in motorcycle crash

Just before 11 p.m. on Friday, a Newton police officer who had been following a motorcycle suspected of speeding found that the vehicle had crashed, according to a release from Newton Police. The motorcyclist, Timothy Shyler Kincaid, 28, of Conover, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Connecting Science to the Real World at Shuford

Shuford Elementary School’s 5th grade students had an exciting day, on Thursday, Dec. 11th.

Educator Sherry Williams, from the Catawba Science Center in Hickory, visited with a batch of preserved amphibians for the students to study. The 5th graders are learning about the human body systems and how each structure functions.
