Hundreds of volunteers will be on site to construct the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground today and Saturday at Kiwanis Park in Hickory.

Interest in the build was so strong that leaders had to stop accepting volunteers three days before the event started on Thursday.

Officials expect about 350 community volunteers to help build the playground.

“They had more volunteers than they could use,” said Jerry White, a Hickory resident and volunteer for the playground project. “It’s just amazing that people will take time out of their schedule to come out here and give time.”
