Zahra Baker painting a reminder for HPD

January 9, 2012

HICKORY — The North Carolina police department that solved the killing of a disabled 10-year-old Australian girl now has a portrait of the child to remind them of their duty to protect children.

A resident gave the city's police department the watercolor painting of the freckle-faced girl.

Police Chief Tom Adkins received the painting Friday with investigators who solved Zahra's slaying. Adkins says the painting will be a reminder of the need to protect children by reporting abuse.

The girl's father brought her from Australia when he married 43-year-old Elisa Baker. Baker was sentenced to up to 18 years in prison for the death of the girl who was later dismembered.

Police say Zahra Baker had been physically abused by her stepmother.
