Traffic was slowed on N.C. 16 South on Monday afternoon around 3:30 p.m., after a three car accident involved a Catawba County Schools school bus and three other vehicles. Highway Patrol officials said the pile up was the result of a driver failing to brake. The accident began with a Chevrolet Malibu failing to brake and colliding with a Chevrolet Tahoe. The Tahoe was then pushed into a Suzuki, and the Suzuki was then pushed into the school bus. Officials weren’t sure if children were on the school bus at the time of the accident. The driver and passenger of the Malibu were transported by Catawba County EMS to Catawba Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries; the other drivers involved in the accident refused treatment. Newton Fire Department, Newton-Conover Rescue Squad, Maiden Rescue and N.C. Highway Patrol responded to the accident. Witnesses said the driver of the Malibu seemed to not see the stopped school bus, along with the number of cars stopped on the roadway.
