Authorities say a woman shot her husband and set him on fire at their home north of the St. Stephens community.
Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid said Tina Canipe Barbour, 47, was charged with murder, first-degree arson and destroy remains conceal death following her release from a local hospital. She was treated for smoke inhalation from the fire.
Reid said fire personnel found Barbour's husband, 51-year-old Floriberto Pena, dead Wednesday night while extinguishing the fire at the couple's home at 6155 Olive Branch Road.
Sheriff's deputies first discovered the fire about 8 p.m. Wednesday night.
Barbour's daughter called authorities with concerns about the well-being of her mother and stepfather, Reid said.
"A deputy goes out to do a welfare check," he said. "When the deputy gets there, he sees smoke coming out of the house. When the fire units put out the fire, they find the body."
Reid said he does not yet know at what time Pena was shot, adding that an investigation continues.
He said the home sustained damage in the basement area.
