Already off to a perfect start to its season, the Bandys girls soccer team notched its fourth win of the season Friday.

Behind a pair of assists by junior Allie Santos and two goals by senior Cassidy Winchester, the Lady Trojans improved to 4-0 overall with a 5-0 victory against Highland Tech.

“The girls played well,” said Bandys coach Cliff Mayer. “I think this is by far our best game this season. We’re 4-0 and ranked 11th in the state. Maybe with this win, we’ll move up. I’ll know on Monday. We’re doing really good.”

The Lady Trojans scored three goals in a span of nine minutes to take a 3-0 lead early in the first half.

Santos found senior Chandler Griffith and sophomore Katie Spaulding for two of those goals, while freshman Rachel Medina pocketed an unassisted goal.

Just before halftime, Santos garnered her third assist in the 36th minute on a pass to Winchester to put Bandys up 4-0 at the break.
Mayer said he was extremely pleased with how Santos passed the ball.

“She by far had the best game for us tonight,” he said. “An assist is sometimes more important than a goal. That was the case tonight.”

With a comfortable lead, Mayer used a majority of his bench to try and build depth for the season ahead.

“I’m trying to develop my younger players,” Mayer said. “I had seven freshmen and six sophomores on the bench today playing. I only have four seniors on the team. So we are a young team, and we are trying to continue to improve.”

Adding her second goal late in the 78th minute, Winchester pocketed an unassisted score for her sixth goal of the season to seal the win.

Mayer said he is already planning ahead for what his team will face when the Catawba Valley 2A slate of games starts.

“Our conference starts next Friday against Newton-Conover at home,” Mayer said. “We’re looking forward to it.”
