Weather moves second Hickory-Shelby playoff game
Hickory Post 48 will have to wait at least one more day to try and tie its series with Shelby Post 82.
Rain caused the second playoff game between the two squads to be rained out on Wednesday.
Game two will now take place today at 7 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds.
Post 82 won the opening game of the series, 5-4, on Tuesday at Shelby High School to take a 1-0 lead against Post 48.
Game three will now be played Friday at Shelby High School.
In necessary, game four would be on Saturday in Hickory with a fifth game at Shelby High on Sunday.
The winner of the series between Hickory and Shelby advances to the Area IV final to meet either Lincoln County (18-11) or Cherryville (16-13) in the title series.
Behind the performance of pitcher Justin Norton, Lincoln County won the first game of the series against Cherryville, 7-3, on Tuesday night at East Lincoln High School.
Center fielder Carroll is out indefinitely
Hickory Post 48 center fielder Phillip Carroll is out indefinitely with an undisclosed injured.
He hopes to return to the team, but it likely wouldn’t be until the Area IV finals or beyond.
“If we were to win this series, I should be able to play, but not sure just yet,” he said. “This has been the worst pain I’ve even been through.”
Carroll didn’t play in Tuesday night’s 5-4 loss in the first game of Hickory’s third round series with Shelby (31-6).
Entering the series, Carroll led Post 48 in several offensive categories, including hits, doubles, home runs, runs scored and batting average.
He missed most of last season with back and knee injuries after a collision at first base in the second game of the season against Rutherford County.
