A strong thuderstorm left a wake of destruction across much of Catawba County late Wednesday afternoon.
High winds paired with lightning damaged several residences and blocked roads with most of the damage occurring in Hickory and the eastern portion of the county.

A modular home was heavily damaged by fire at 1708 Kestrel Valley Ln., Sherrills Ford.

Just after 4 p.m. lightning struck a tree adjacent to the residence which set the unoccupied house on fire.
