Warriors top Bears, return to CVAC final
Despite putting up a strong effort Wednesday, the Bunker Hill boys basketball team had its season ended by West Caldwell, 67-47.
The loss ends the Bears' four-game winning streak.
Bunker Hill (7-18) led 16-15 after the first quarter, giving the top-seeded Warriors (16-6) an early scare.
West Caldwell outscored the Bears 15-6 in the second quarter and carried a 30-22 lead into halftime. Ashton Smith paced the Warriors in the first half with eight points.
The Warriors' 21-point third quarter pulled them ahead by double-digits heading into the final frame. The Bears were unable to recover.
Smith led West Caldwell with 17 points, while Deshawn Patterson scored 15 points, including 10-of-11 from the free-throw line.
Jordan McGinnis scored 11 points for Bunker Hill, while Colton Chapman added 10 points.
The Warriors meet the winner of today's game between No. 2 East Burke and No. 3 Newton-Conover. That game is slated for an 8 p.m. start at Catawba Valley Community College's Tarlton Complex.
NWC boys semifinals: Hickory 65, Watauga 51
Trailing 33-31 at the half, the Hickory boys basketball team avoided an upset against Watauga to advance to Friday’s boys title game in the Northwestern 3A/4A.
The Red Tornadoes (22-3) outscored the Pioneers in the second half, 33-17, on their way to a 64-51 win.
NWC boys semifinals: Alexander Central 45, St. Stephens 44
Alek Ayer made a tip-in at the buzzer to lift the Cougars to thrilling win against the Indians (15-11) at Hickory High School.
The Cougars (20-5) meet Hickory in Friday’s boys title game, which takes place at 8 p.m.
