County leaders are hoping for a federal disaster declaration following last month's flooding, they said during Monday morning's commissioners meeting.

If that declaration is approved, they county plans to set up a disaster recovery center where citizens can go through the application process to be approved for state and federal assistance.

But as of late Monday, no federal decision had been announced.

As part of an initial hurdle in the process, Gov. Pat McCrory has asked the U.S. Small Business Administration to declare seven North Carolina counties stricken by recent flooding as disaster areas.
If approved, the federal declaration McCrory sought Friday will qualify flooding victims in each of those counties eligible for low-interest government loans to repair or replace damaged homes or businesses.
