Newton-Conover announced on Thursday that it has hired Mark Carter to be its new head boys basketball coach, effective immediately. Carter takes over for David Rutledge, who left earlier this month to take the open job at his alma mater, South Iredell.
Carter is a former coach at Bunker Hill, with his last coaching job coming at West Iredell. He bring to the Red Devils 15 years experience. After spending several years in administration in the Iredell/Statesville School System, he has since retired and decided to enter the private business sector. "We feel very fortunate to be able to give our athletes the opportunity to work with someone with coach Carter's experience, knowledge of the game, understanding of high school athletics and continuing interest in young people and coaching basketball," the school said in a press release. "Coach Carter has expressed excitement and enthusiasm about coaching basketball again and being associated with Newton-Conover athletics." Carter's hiring is the second such hire for the Red Devils in as many years. Former head coach Steve Lytton retired following the 2006-07 season, and Rutledge was there for one year (2007-08).
