Of the five candidates vying for three open positions on the board, incumbent Barbara Beatty’s spending more than doubles that of her fellow running mates with $6,946.45. Jack Beach and Dan Hunsucker also submitted reports to the Catawba County Board of Elections, while Phillip Parlier and George McClellan chose not to, promising to stay under the $3,000 threshold. Each of the state and local candidates are required to report the amount of money raised and spent during their campaigns unless they sign a form stating they will not spend more than the $3,000 threshold.
Beatty’s campaign raised a total of $8,365. Between Jan. 1 and April 19, her campaign accepted $7,025 in contributions from individuals and another $125 combined in smaller contributions. Among Beatty’s largest expenses was gasoline. The Committee to Elect Barbara Beatty paid her $6,676 in reimbursement for her mileage. Meanwhile Beach granted his campaign a loan of $2,511.84 after starting his campaign with $6.33. Although she raised the most money of all five candidates, Jack Beach’s campaign committee spent more on advertising. Beatty spent $975 on radio advertisements and $176 on newspaper advertisements for a total of $1,151 while Beach spent $1,500 on radio advertisements. Meanwhile Beach’s campaign spent $1,011.84 on yard signs from Premium Graphicx to the $835.85 Beatty spent. All totaled, Beatty’s campaign has spent a total of $2,628.79 and Beach has spent a total of $2,511.84. Of the three candidates who submitted campaign finance reports, Commissioner Dan Hunsucker has spent the least. Hunsucker began the election with $100 in contributions from W. Stine Isenhower.
