The names have been released for the three people shot near Jason's Deli in Hickory on Wednesday night.
The man that police say was shooting the handgun was Paul Vang, 47, of Conover.
After police responded to a 911 call on U.S. 70 Southeast, they found Vang standing over female with a handgun.
The suspect, Vang, fired shots and the responding officer, Jonathan Barnes, returned fire in response.
Vang later was transported to Catawba Valley Medical Center, and was later pronounced dead as a result of gunshot wounds.
Police also determined that another male, Xao Vue, 27, of Conover, had been shot, along with Sandy Vang, 37.
Vue was transferred to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem where he is listed in critical condition for a gunshot wound to the head.
Sandy Vang has been transferred to the Carolinas Medical Center and is being treated for gunshot wounds and injuries to her lower extremities.
The Hickory Police Criminal Investigations Division and the State Bureau of Investigation are conducting an administrative investigation of the incident.
The officer, Jonathan Barnes has been with the department for 2 ½ years and he will be placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation, which the Hickory Police say is standard practice with any police-involved shooting.
