The North Carolina High School Athletic Association on Wednesday approved the proposed realignment plan for the 2009-13 school years. The March 8 proposal, which was changed after appeals, was approved without any further changes. The approved proposal calls for the current Catawba Valley Athletic Conference and its 10 members to be broken up into three separate leagues. The current league has only been in existence since 2005, and has one more year left.
Hibriten and Patton changed classifications from 2A to 3A, and each will be put into a separate league once the 2009-10 school year begins. No other schools currently in the CVAC changed classifications. The three leagues the CVAC was broken up into will be a combination 3A-4A league, a combination 2A-3A league (like the current structure) and a 2A league only. Fred T. Foard, Hibriten, Hickory and St. Stephens will join Watauga, Alexander Central and South Caldwell in a combo 3A-4A league. Alexander Central, Watauga and South Caldwell are currently 4A schools, and will remain that way. First-year school Patton, in Burke County, will join Freedom, R-S Central, Burns, Chase, East Rutherford and Shelby in a combo 2A-3A league. With Draughn High, a new school opening in Burke County in the fall, there will be four high schools in the county. Because of that, Freedom will drop from a 4A school to 3A, and Patton will rise from 2A to a 3A. East Burke, which is currently a 4A and with the Northwestern 4A Conference, will drop to a 2A and will join what is left of the CVAC. The core of current CVAC 2A schools will remain intact — Bandys, Bunker Hill, Maiden, Newton-Conover and West Caldwell. Those schools will join East Burke, Draughn and South Iredell to form a new 2A-only conference. Draughn High has already announced it will not field a football team in its first year, just like Patton did not last season. |
